Day 16

BIBLE  Joseph's Dreams

Activity:  Read/tell the story of Joseph's dreams found in Genesis 37:1–11. What did Jacob give to Joseph? (v3: A richly ornamented robe; a robe; a coat of many colors; etc.) How did Joseph’s brothers feel when their father gave him the robe?  (Jealous; angry; full of hate; etc.) When Joseph told his family about his dreams, what happened? (v5 and v10: His brothers hated him even more; his father rebuked him; they were angry; etc.) How do you think Joseph felt when his brothers hated him because of his dreams? (Sad; frustrated; scared; sorry he told them; etc.) We are often tempted to feel jealous of someone who tells us about something good that has happened to them. Why is it sometimes hard to be happy when a friend has good news? (We wish the good news had happened to us; we are selfish; jealous; etc.) Discuss with your child a situation where he might have been jealous of a friend's good fortune. How might his jealousy have made his friend feel? (Sad; frustrated; scared; sorry he told him; etc.) How does God want us to respond to others good fortune? (Be thankful; rejoice; be happy; etc.)

*Additional Activity: Cut out several 1" strips (horizontally) from different colored sheets of construction paper. Fold another sheet of construction paper in half vertically. Starting at the fold, cut seven straight lines (about an inch apart), stopping 1" from the edge of the paper. Open the paper up and guide your child as he weaves the paper strips over and under each cut. Continue weaving until the paper is full and then trim the strips. If you want, glue the paper weaving on to a larger sheet of paper as a reminder of Joseph and his coat of many colors.

Prayer Focus: Help me to rejoice with others.

LANGUAGE SKILLS  What's Missing?

Activity: Place three small items (toys, kitchen items, etc.) on the table. Give your child some time to look at them. Then ask him to close his eyes while you remove one of the items. Have him open his eyes and ask, "What's missing?" Do this activity several times.

PHYSICAL   EDUCATION  Activity: ____________________________

MATH  Left and Right

Activity: If your child is right-handed, explain to him that his right hand is the one he writes with, and his other hand is his left hand. (If left-handed, do it in reverse!) Then give your child some simple directions like "put your race car in your right hand" or "put your left hand on your head." When your child grasps the concept, you can try two-step directions like "put the ball in your left hand and the crayon in your right hand."

HEALTH, SAFETY, & MANNERS  Eye Exam

Activity: On a sheet of paper, make a sample vision chart by randomly drawing letter E's with the "fingers" facing right, left, up and down. Make 4 rows with the E's in line 1 approximately 2˝" long, line 2 - 2" long, line 3 - 1˝" long, and line 4 - 1" long. Hang the chart on a wall, with your child standing about 8 ft from it. Explain that this is one way an eye doctor may check his eyes. As you point (with a pencil) to a figure on the chart, ask your child to point his fingers in the same direction as the "E".
Note: This is not a diagnostic eye exam and is intended for fun and learning purposes only!

MEMORY VERSE  Proverbs 20:11; Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right.
